3 Ways Strength Training Helps to Relieve Back Pain

About one of every four Canadians suffers from back pain. And many of them either first hurt their back, or made back pain worse, by trying to lift a heavy weight, or by trying to do so using the wrong technique.

In any case, if you tell those back pain sufferers that a good way to relieve back pain is by lifting weights, your advice stands a good chance of not being followed.

How Strength Training Helps Relieve Your Back Pain

First, you should not start any sort of strength training program without first taking to your doctor. Also, to avoid making your back pain worse, consult with a personal trainer or physiotherapist to ensure you use proper techniques.

1. Strengthens Muscles

Your back is supported by more than your back muscles. Your core abdominal muscles are at least as important for keeping your bac injury-free. When you strengthen your core muscles, you improve the support your back gets, which can help reduce pain and prevent further pain and injury.

2. Increases Bone Density

When you build your muscles, you build more than your muscles. Strength training increases the density of your bones too. That helps your back pain by further supporting your back and by reducing the chances of injury.

3. Improves Your Balance

How many times have you slipped and felt a nasty twinge in your back. Many forms of back pain are caused by sudden misalignment’s of your body. Strength training improves your balance and reduces your chances of injury-causing slips and falls by not only strengthening your muscles, but by simply training you to be more stable on your feet.

Back pain is not something any one should have to live with. Used in combination with other treatments, including chiropractic, massage, acupuncture and physiotherapy, strength training can be part of an effective, drug-free back pain relief program.
