3 Reasons for Getting Physical Therapy When You Don’t ‘Need’ It

Maybe this post shouldn’t be about why you should get physical therapy even when you’re not in pain, but about not letting stereotypes about treatment modalities get in the way of you enjoying their benefit.

If you asked anyone when you should get physical therapy, just about all of them would say something like: after you hurt yourself at work, or when you get injured playing sports or if you’re suffer an injury in a motor vehicle accident. And they would all be right.

But the idea that physical therapy is only to treat a strain, sprain or injury that hinders the motion and use of joints, limbs or muscles doesn’t give the complete picture of what physical therapy can do for you.

Especially if you lead an active lifestyle, physical therapy can help you before you suffer pain, and even help you prevent painful injuries. Here are just a few of the ways:

1. Boosts Your Confidence

When you know that your body is better prepared for physical activity, it gives you more confidence and peace of mind as you take part in your activities.

2. Increase Your Knowledge of How Your Body Works

Talk to anyone who has gone through physical therapy and they’ll tell you they learned a lot about what they might have been doing incorrectly before, how injuries in one part of the body can cause issues in another area, and that they are generally more aware of how their body works.

3. You’ll Be Able to Help Yourself at Home

Physical therapists are happy to show you exercises and motions you can do at home to continue to keep your body in shape for your activities.

Instead of thinking about it as purely a form of rehabilitation, you should also think of physical therapy as a treatment for your body to help prevent injury and the pain that can result.
