Is Physiotherapy Covered by OHIP?

Many people in Ontario assume physiotherapy is automatically covered by OHIP. The reality is more specific. While OHIP does fund physiotherapy in certain cases, coverage is limited and eligibility requirements apply.

If you live in the Greater Toronto Area and are considering physiotherapy, here is what you need to know about OHIP coverage.

Is Physiotherapy Covered by OHIP in Ontario?

Physiotherapy is covered by OHIP only under specific circumstances.

OHIP funds physiotherapy through designated community clinics for individuals who meet certain eligibility criteria. It does not provide blanket coverage for all residents.

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements, you would need to access private physiotherapy services.

Who Qualifies for OHIP-Funded Physiotherapy?

You may qualify for OHIP-funded physiotherapy if you are:

  • 19 years old or younger
  • 65 years old or older
  • Recently discharged from hospital after an eligible surgery or hospital stay
  • Receiving benefits through Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works

Eligibility is based on provincial guidelines and must be confirmed before starting care.

If you do not fall into one of these categories, OHIP will not cover physiotherapy services.

Where Can You Access OHIP Physiotherapy?

OHIP-funded physiotherapy is only available at approved community physiotherapy clinics.

Not every clinic offers OHIP-funded care. You must attend a clinic that has an agreement with the provincial program.

These clinics operate under government guidelines that influence appointment structure and service delivery.

What Are the Limitations of OHIP Clinics?

OHIP-funded physiotherapy often comes with limitations in structure and availability.

Because clinics are funded at fixed rates, they frequently manage high patient volumes. This can result in shorter appointments or shared treatment environments.

Access to extended one-on-one time and advanced rehabilitation equipment may be limited.

The program provides access to care, but it does not always offer the same level of individualized attention found in private clinics.

How Private Physiotherapy Differs

Private physiotherapy clinics operate independently of OHIP funding.

In private care settings, treatment plans are typically more flexible and tailored to the individual. Appointment lengths may be longer, and one-on-one time with the physiotherapist is often prioritized.

Private clinics also tend to offer access to broader rehabilitation equipment and modalities that support recovery.

The structure allows for customized progression based on your specific goals.

Do Most People Have Private Insurance Coverage?

Many individuals in the GTA have extended health benefits through their employer that cover physiotherapy.

Coverage amounts vary by plan. Some policies provide a set annual dollar limit, while others reimburse a percentage of each visit.

You do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario. However, some insurance providers may require one for reimbursement, although this is less common.

Checking your benefits before booking gives you clarity on coverage.

Is a Referral Required for OHIP Physiotherapy?

In many cases, a physician referral is required for OHIP-funded physiotherapy.

Because the program operates under specific eligibility guidelines, documentation may be necessary to confirm qualification.

For private physiotherapy, a referral is not required unless your insurance plan specifically requests one.

Should You Choose OHIP or Private Care?

The right choice depends on your eligibility, financial situation, and treatment goals.

If you qualify for OHIP-funded physiotherapy, it provides access to care at no direct cost. However, appointment availability and structure may be more limited.

Private physiotherapy offers greater flexibility, individualized attention, and often shorter wait times. For individuals with extended health benefits, private care is frequently accessible.

If you are unsure which option applies to you, clarifying your eligibility and insurance coverage is the first step.
