Post Surgical Rehabilitation at Etobicoke TOPS Clinic

If you are to undergo a surgical procedure, it helps to learn as much as you can about it. One crucial point that many people don’t fully understand is the importance of their post-surgical rehabilitation program. Even successful surgeries can be complicated by issues during recovery. Conversely, the better the recovery program, the faster and more successful the entire process will be.

Enhanced Post Surgery Recovery

PinPoint Health’s Etobicoke TOPS Clinic offers a complete post-surgical rehabilitation program (PSRP), designed and managed by surgeons, medical doctors and healthcare professionals from a wide range of disciplines, to ensure your recovery from surgery is as successful and risk-free as possible. Your PSRP can include some or all of the following.

Tailored to Your Needs

Your PSRP is designed in conjunction with the recommendations of your medical doctor and/or surgeon regarding your procedure. If time allows, it begins with a pre-operative appointment and assessment at least one month before your procedure. This gives us time to get to know you, the procedure you will under go, and what the right recovery program will include.

Mobilization & Range of Motion Exercises

It’s critical to maintain mobility as soon as it is safe to do so following surgery. Controlled and gradual movements, guided by a physical therapist, help to keep your body limber and avoid muscle atrophy and stiffness.

Strength Building Exercises

Even ‘simple’ procedures put your body through stresses that it rarely faces. Returning to normal levels of strength helps your body to deal with the stresses and return to normal sooner.

Pain Management

Pain can be a significant hurdle in your recovery. Your PSRP includes a complete pain management strategy. It can include medications, physical therapies, and treatments such as ice or heat therapy.

Balance, Coordination & Functional Activities

As your recovery progresses, your PSRP shifts to include exercises that prepare you for a return to your usual activities. Some surgical procedures can affect your balance and coordination, even for simple tasks. You may also have specific functional requirements, like job-related tasks, that are affected by surgery. The PSRP team will create a rehabilitation program specifically to help you get your life back to normal.

Preparing for Lifestyle Changes

Your rehabilitation can include lifestyle modifications to speed recovery, and to prevent reinjury and other issues in the future. These modifications can include a better diet, staying active and maintaining healthy habits. Your PSRP can help inform you of the changes needed and make sure you get a good start in your new lifestyle.
